The Pistorius case: The athlete charged with murdering his girlfriend

The Pistorius case serves as yet another example of the convergence of our celebrity obsessed culture and the 24-hour news media. Many lessons can be learned from the early stages of the case. We are left to consider why we, as a society, feel the need to invest so heavily in athletes and push them to be role models for our young ones. Surely, we’ve seen enough examples over the last decade of heroes created and forged in the public eye, only to be torn down in an instant when they display unsavoury conduct that falls along the human continuum.

Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms- Section 10

This section of the Charter, specifies rights upon arrest or detention. The section reads: Everyone has the right on arrest or detention: a) To be informed promptly of the reasons therefor; b) To retain and instruct counsel without delay and to be informed of that right; c) To have the validity of the detention determined by way of habeas corpus and to be released if the detention is not lawful.
